Our Namesake: Daniel Pearl
Daniel Pearl was born in Princeton, New Jersey on October 10, 1963. His family moved to California where Daniel Pearl graduated from Birmingham High School. He graduated from Stanford University in 1985. Afterwards, he got a job with The Wall Street Journal where he was an investigative journalist. He had a passion for music and played the electric violin, fiddle, and mandolin. Daniel Pearl went on to marry Mariane Van Neyenhoff.
In 2000, he become the paper’s South Asia bureau chief. On Jan. 23, 2002, thinking he was being taken to interview a radical Islamic leader, he was kidnapped in Karachi, and four days later an e-mailed photograph of him in chains and with a gun to his head was released. His death was confirmed on February 21 after a videotape showing his execution was received by American officials.
His son, Adam Daniel Pearl, was born 3 months later in Paris on May 28, 2002.
The Daniel Pearl Foundation was formed in Daniel Pearl’s name to promote cross-cultural understanding, diminish ethnic and religious hatred, encourage responsible and creative journalism and unite people through the universal language of music.
