Course Descriptions
9th Grade English A and B
This foundational course is split into two semesters, designed to introduce freshmen to high school-level English. In the first semester (English A), students will focus on building essential skills in grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension through various literary genres. The second semester (English B) continues this development with an emphasis on writing, including narrative, persuasive, and argumentative styles. Both semesters aim to cultivate a love of reading and writing while preparing students for higher-level English courses.
Honors 9th Grade English A and B
This honors-level course, also divided into two semesters, offers an accelerated and more rigorous exploration of English for freshmen. Semester A focuses on advanced grammar, vocabulary, and literary analysis. Semester B emphasizes sophisticated writing techniques and critical thinking. Students will engage with challenging texts and complex writing assignments, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature. This course aims to prepare students for future honors and AP-level English courses.
10th Grade English A and B
This two-semester course covers essential components of English language arts, including literature, composition, and grammar. Students will study a variety of literary genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, and drama. The curriculum emphasizes reading comprehension, literary analysis, and written expression. Students will also practice research skills and engage in projects that enhance their understanding of the texts.
Honors 10th Grade English A and B
The honors version of the 10th grade English course offers a more rigorous and in-depth study of literature and composition. Students will explore complex texts and advanced literary concepts, and will be expected to produce sophisticated analytical and creative writing. The course aims to develop critical thinking and articulate expression, preparing students for higher-level English courses. Assignments and discussions will challenge students to explore diverse perspectives and enhance their analytical skills.
11th Grade American Literature
This course covers the rich tapestry of American literature, from colonial times to the present day. Students will read and analyze works by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Maya Angelou, and Emily Dickinson. The curriculum includes poetry, short stories, novels, and essays, with a focus on understanding the historical and cultural contexts of each piece.
11th Grade Contemporary Composition
In this course, students will develop their writing skills through various forms of contemporary writing, including essays, narratives, and multimedia projects. Emphasis is placed on the writing and revision process and effective communication of ideas. Students will engage in peer reviews, workshops, and independent projects to enhance their ability to write for many different audiences and purposes.
AP English Literature (11th Grade)
This advanced placement course is designed for students with a passion for reading and analyzing literature. Students will explore a wide range of literary works from different genres and time periods focusing on critical thinking and analytical writing. The course prepares students for the AP exam and college-level literature courses, emphasizing literary analysis, thematic interpretation, and scholarly writing.
12th Grade Modern Literature
This class explores significant literary works from the 20th and 21st centuries, examining themes such as identity, existentialism, and societal change. Students will read novels, plays, and poetry from diverse authors and cultural perspectives. The course encourages critical discussion and analytical writing, helping students to draw connections between literature and contemporary issues.
12th Grade Expository Composition
In this course, seniors will refine their writing skills with a focus on clear, coherent, and structured expository writing. Students will learn to develop their ideas through various forms of essays, research papers, and analytical responses. THis course will also support seniors in writing their college admissions essays and prepare for entry into the workforce. Emphasis is placed on the writing process, including drafting, revising, and editing, as well as on the importance of audience and purpose in writing.
AP English Language and Composition (12th Grade)
This advanced placement course focuses on developing students' skills in rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and synthesis of information from various texts. Students will engage in extensive reading and writing exercises designed to enhance their understanding of non-fiction, including essays, journalism, political writing, and other forms of expository prose. The course prepares students for the AP exam and emphasizes critical thinking, analytical writing, and the ability to craft well-supported arguments.
